Using Pressure Treated Lumber For A Trellis

Most of the treated timber at your neighborhood hardware store will be yellow pine. It is mostly a yellowish color, which can often times look a little green after being treated. The pros of using treated pine start with its relatively low cost, when compared to other common timbers that are adequate for outdoor structures such as red cedar. This option will give you the least expensive trellis possible. So, if the cost is your primary concern, then the choice has already been made and you will have a pine arbor, pergola or other garden structure. There are some other factors involved in the decision making for most people, though. One being the impact on the environment, because the majority of treated wood, is treated with CCA, chrome, copper and arsenic, and arsenic being known to be a source of cancer. If you are a DIY kind of guy, then you will end up with Arsenic in your lungs after cutting, and if your kids will be playing on it then they will have it on them too. And, don't even think about growing berries on your arbor that's has been treated with CCA. In the treating process, these chemicals are added to the timber, often, when it still has very high moisture content. This plays a part in the cheap price, because the factory doesn't have to dry it, but it also might result in some cons in your garden structures like gazebos. Wet wood will change in shape considerably when dried, which can lead to bowing, warping and cracking in your garden structure. Having said that, treated timber is as of now pleasing many folks around, that have built their back porches and backyard using this as their wood.

But if treated lumber isn't your cup of tea, then there are a lot of other alternatives of timber for unique pergolas or even vinyl pergolas at Best Pergolas.
