An Introduction To Forging Procedure Of Steel

The significance of steel in our lives is undeniable. It is so important that steel is everywhere. It is in our houses, offices, cars, parks and everywhere which you can think of. However, the steel which we see in our daily lives is not in its original form but in fact has undergone course of treatment to increase its qualities.

Forging is among the first steel treatment methods discovered by humans. The forging process would traditionally involve a blacksmith along with a hammer and anvil. The blacksmith also uses water to cool down the heated work piece. Rolling mills is a metal forming procedure in which metal stock is passed through a pair of rolls. Rolling is categorized according to the temperature of the metal rolled. If the temperature of the metal is above its recrystallization temperature, then the process is known as hot rolling.

However, the forging process today has undergone modernization. It no longer involves a blacksmith manually laboring away with a sludge hammer and anvil to form the desired shape. This tedious process is now replaced by either using presses or hydraulic or hammers powered by compressed air. Regardless of this, there are also hammers powered by steam and electricity also. Despite the modernization of the forging basic principal of the forging process remains the same.

The forging procedure requires a compressive stress to be applied on the work piece. This is in order to refine the grain structure of the work piece so that they are orientated to the path of principle stresses that the work piece will encounter during actual use. In this way, the work piece will have improved strength, ductility and toughness.

The forging procedure begins with a standard billet to be reshaped. Previously, the forging procedure could only be performed for uncomplicated shapes such as swords and blades. The reason behind this is that it was hard to produce complex shapes precisely. Today, due to the improvements in modern forging techniques, the forging process is not just restricted to simple shapes anymore. Complex shapes could now be forged accurately using modern presses.

There are two kinds of the forging process. This is the hot forging and cold forging. The grain structure of the forged part and also its properties is affected by the temperatures at which the forging procedure is carried out. Hot Forging is when the forging process is carried out at a temperature above its re-crystallization temperature. On the other hand, it is known as cold forging if it is performed under its re-crystallization temperature.

There are a few varieties of the forging procedures. Impact forging and press forging are two of the most popular forging processes. The hammer or load is applied by impact in impact forging. This causes the deformation to occur in a very short time. Force or pressure is constantly applied to the work piece in press forging. It can be done either by hot or cold forging

Other forging procedure methods include roll forging, swaging, cogging, open-die forging, impression-die forging, press forging, automatic hot forging and upsetting.

The Hot Extrusion Process - The Way It Works And Its Main Associated Tasks
The extrusion process can be categorized into hot extrusion, warm extrusion and cold extrusion. These three types differ in the temperatures to which metals are exposed to and several other aspects. To make things clearer, let me start by defining the term extrusion
